White Terraces that overlooks the city: Pamukkale Travertines
World famous Pamukkale travertines are one for the book when it comes to visiting a different place. They are located in Denizli, Turkey. Anyone who wants to get in some water with healing properties is welcome here. Although there are many travertine examples in the world, the ones in Pamukkale are by far the most magnificent with their cotton white color hence the name “pamuk kale” meaning cotton castle. The name was given since these white travertines are located 200 meters overlooking the city.
How was it formed?
Like fairy chimneys, travertines are also natural formations. “Pamukkale's terraces are made of travertine, a sedimentary rock deposited by mineral water from the hot springs.” When the hot spring water reaches the surface, the carbon dioxide inside de-gasses which is how the travertines are created. The beauty of places to see in Turkey comes from most of them being natural formations. That’s why there are so many UNESCO-protected areas.
The Importance
Pamukkale Travertines are one of most important tourist attractions in Turkey. It has been on UNESCO’s World Heritage List along with Hierapolis since 1988. Now that I mentioned Hierapolis which is the other important criterion for the location of Pamukkale. Travertines are located as terraces looking over the city and if you go further on these hills, you’ll get to see the ancient city of Hierapolis.
What to do in Denizli?
You can arrive in Denizli by plane, car, or train. Obviously, the first thing to do is to visit Pamukkale travertines and Hierapolis. Visiting downtown is another activity you can do along with tasting the local dishes but after all these visits why not just relax for the rest of your trip since there are literally hot springs in Denizli waiting for you to rest and enjoy the healing waters. In the Karahayıt district, there are loads of hotels with hot springs to choose from.
